Siloam Springs, circa 1910: “Arkansas record, 756 pounds.” Hogs have been part of Arkansas history since explorer Hernando de Soto’s party released domestic pigs in the 1500s. Some escaped to the woods and reproduced rapidly, over time becoming the “razorbacks.” In 1910, the University of Arkansas replaced its mascot, the cardinal, with the razorback.
