Florida bans students without legal residency from public universities

The Florida Board of Governors voted on Thursday to ban students without legal immigration status from attending any state university. The policy change, nestled in board’s consent agenda, states that students who are in the “present in the United States unlawfully” will not be allowed to enroll in any public university which did not admit all “qualified applicants.” The Florida Board of Education took the same step in July by banning students without legal status from attending Florida colleges or adult education programs. About 8,000 students without legal status graduate from Florida high schools every year, according to a report from the President’s Alliance of Higher Education and Immigration. Florida’s K-12 schools enroll the third-most students without legal status. This change will impact the children of undocumented workers, who registered for and matriculated through public school in Florida, said United Faculty of Florida President Robert Casanello. Gov.
