New Traffic Management System Using Cameras and AI Goes into Operation in Athens

A new traffic management system came into operation on Tuesday in Greece's Attica region, which includes the capital Athens, public broadcaster ERT reported. The Greek police's Traffic Commander system will use cameras, drones and artificial intelligence tools to detect traffic congestion and incidents more quickly and dispatch traffic police teams to affected areas, according to the report. The system's operations centre is located at the Attica General Police Directorate and collects data from various sources, including 235 traffic-monitoring cameras, information on road accidents, roadworks, weather conditions and public transport movements. Ten drones will also be involved in monitoring, while more than 138 police officers from the specially established KOMVOS unit will work both at the operations centre and along major road arteries.
