The driver of a car that hit a pole in San Bruno last weekend, killing a passenger, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and manslaughter, police said Tuesday. Early Sunday morning just before 1 a.m., officers responded to a solo vehicle crash near the intersection of El Camino Real and the westbound Interstate 380 off-ramp, according to police. The vehicle hit a light pole. The driver, a 29-year-old San Francisco man and his passenger, a 22-year-old San Francisco man, both sustained major injuries and the passenger later died. Investigators allege that the driver was operating the car while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said. The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing bodily injury or death and being in possession of a controlled substance. Police are not releasing the name of the driver or of the deceased passenger.
