Burgas Hosts International Forum on Maritime Heritage, Fishing Traditions

An international forum on preserving maritime heritage and the traditions of fishing communities opened at the Chengene Skele Cultural and Tourist Complex in Burgas on Thursday. The two-day event, titled Maritime Heritage and Fishing Traditions: Communities, Policies and Sustainable Development, brings together academics, local authorities, museums and NGOs from Bulgaria, Turkiye, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, Ukraine and Italy. Burgas Deputy Mayor Diana Savateva said Chengene Skele was a fitting venue because it combines living traditions with modern approaches to their preservation. She stressed the need for cooperation among Black Sea municipalities, as fishing traditions extend beyond individual cities. Irena Todorova, Executive Director of the UNESCO Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe, emphasized that communities themselves must play a central role in preserving and passing on traditions.
