Strict Controls Ordered after Sheep and Goat Pox Outbreak in Yambol Region

Strict controls and immediate veterinary examinations of all sheep and goats have been ordered following an outbreak of sheep and goat pox in the village of Dzhinot, Straldzha Municipality, Yambol Region, veterinary authorities said Tuesday. A total of 135 animals have been culled and the owner of the farm will be compensated. The regional epizootic commission, chaired by Yambol Regional Governor Georgi Chalykov, banned the movement and transportation of small ruminants in the affected area and ordered increased road checks. Animals must be kept indoors, while markets, exhibitions and other events involving sheep and goats are prohibited. Inspections to detect illegal trade and unauthorized movement of animals will also be stepped up. Farmers must immediately notify veterinary authorities if they suspect the disease or detect animal deaths. Transportation will only be permitted to the nearest slaughterhouse in Yambol Region and with written authorization from the director of the Region
