Letter: State should not mix criminals and noncriminals at Alaska Psychiatric Institute

I read the Aug. 12 Anchorage Daily News story by Chris Aadland, “In rare verdict, Anchorage man found guilty but mentally ill in 2015 stabbing of his parents.” As a former patient at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute, here is what I got out of the story. I spent months dodging violent patients, and in my case, it hindered recovery. According to the story, Martin Victor IV spent years at API. It has been my experience that the state agencies running API have no problem mixing criminals and noncriminals on the same unit. It has always been my opinion that when the state built the new API, it should have increased the forensic unit from 10 beds to 40 beds so that criminals and noncriminals would not be mixed together. — Faith J.
