What Kalani Sitake said prior to first game of the season against FCS Utah Tech

Four days after BYU shook up its athletic department head football coach Kalani Sitake met with reporters via Zoom to discuss this week’s season-opening game against Utah Tech. Not surprisingly, Sitake was not interested in talking about the restructuring or the fact that football will act independently of the other 20 sports in the department and he will now report to BYU advancement vice president Keith Vorkink “Yeah, my job is to be the head football coach at BYU and take care of these young men, and try to give the fans what they deserve,” he said in response to a question about reporting to someone other than the second-year athletic director from the Deseret News. “That’s what I’ll be focused on. I’m not going to really worry about that stuff right now, and just focus on the team.” The coach is 84-45 in 10 seasons as BYU’s coach, including a 23-4 record the past two years.
