Dangerous swimming conditions expected along Lake Michigan, beach hazards statement in effect

If you’ve thought about heading to the beach this weekend, you might want to reconsider. A beach hazards statement is in effect through Sunday evening, with the National Weather Service warning of dangerous currents and waves between 3 and 6 feet tall. The statement covers beaches in northern and central Cook County, along with Lake County, Indiana. The NWS warns swimming conditions will be life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers. The city of Evanston also issued an alert for its beaches, saying residents should stay out of the water when no lifeguards are on duty and red flags are posted. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water to avoid dangerous swimming conditions – and not to go into piers, jetties, breakwalls or other shoreline structures.
