Microsoft-backed Three Mile Island reboot meets data centre backlash

A 262-tonne transformer that had been shipped from South Korea arrived in Pennsylvania this week as the US state pushes ahead with plans to revive the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor . The restart of the plant, which suffered a partial meltdown in 1979, has emerged as a crucial test to see whether the tech companies driving the artificial intelligence race can build new power sources without attracting more public fury, amid a backlash over rising energy costs and environmental concerns. On Wednesday, the company behind the Three Mile Island refurbishment, Constellation Energy, shared video of the first of three massive transformers arriving at the site in Middletown, on the back of an oversized lorry. Constellation Energy is restarting the reactor's Unit 1 and has renamed it the Crane Clean Energy Centre . Plans for the restart of Unit 1 are rooted in the AI boom , which needs energy to power the proliferation of data centres that help to handle mushrooming processing needs. View th
