Part one of the story highlights a nationwide trend of skyrocketing premiums for and declining enrollment in Affordable Care Act plans. Enhanced premium tax credits that expanded financial aid and allowed more people to qualify expired earlier this year, leaving many enrollees without affordable options. Florida, the state with the most ACA enrollees where one in five residents are covered, is being hit hard. Over 200,000 Floridians dropped coverage this year, and even with other tax credits, premiums rose $468 a year on average. Orlando resident Caitlin McElroy can’t work full time because of her Crohn’s disease, but she needs a part-time job so she can qualify for health insurance and afford treatment. McElroy, 38, works to pay her bills and to be eligible for Affordable Care Act coverage. She spends about $250 to $300 a month on copays for medications for Crohn’s diseas
