Bulgaria's Kozlouy N-plant is forced to reduce its output as the Danube is receding amid unprecedented drought. The Energy Ministry announced Thursday that it will "preventively lower the output of Kozloduy's Unit 5 by some 120 MW on August 21". Unit 5 has a capacity to generate just over 1,000 MW. The decision is part of the measures aiming to ensure the safe operation of the N-plant. It is the first time in the 52-year history of the N-plant that it is forced to reduce its output due to extreme weather conditions. The forecast is for the Danube to continue receding in the Bulgarian section, the Energy Ministry said. The Ministry said that a work group for crisis management was established at Kozloduy in early June as the Danube level started dropping and the forecast was for extended drought in Western and Central Europe.
