The city of San Jose will begin the emergency removal Thursday of all 32 palm trees that make up the iconic Circle of Palms. The city is expected to begin removing the trees at 10 a.m. The work could take up to nine days. All of the palm trees are in decline, according to the city, and about 15 are already dead or dying. Some of the trees are also leaning and are at risk of falling. The city fenced off the area Aug. 7 to keep people out and protect them from any trees that might fall. An arborist who examined the trees found serious problems, with nearly half appearing to be dead or dying. It is not clear what killed those trees or caused the others to decline. The Circle of Palms is a California Historical Landmark. The trees surround the California state seal embossed in the plaza on Market Street near the San Jose Museum of Art.
