The National Weather Service has confirmed two additional tornadoes from last week’s derecho, bringing the total number of twisters to eight. The derecho swept through the Chicago area last Tuesday morning, bringing straight-line winds in excess of 100 miles per hour and devastating tornadoes to the region, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of residents in the process. On Tuesday, the National Weather Service’s damage assessment teams confirmed two more tornadoes that had touched down during that severe weather outbreak on August 11, with both occurring in the area around Morris in Grundy County. One of the tornadoes touched down to the southwest of Morris, tracking along a path 1.6 miles long and packing winds of 80 miles per hour, giving it an EF-0 classification. A second tornado was also confirmed in the northeastern portion of Morris, also listed as an EF-0 with wind speeds of 80 miles per hour. That tornado was on the ground for approximately 2.2 miles, officials said.
