The baby at the center of a surrogacy case that has grabbed national attention, and who was born with a severe congenital heart condition, has undergone open heart surgery, according to an attorney for his parents. Lee Budner, the attorney for the California-based couple Omar Ahmed and Nausheen Gilkar, provided the update in a Monday afternoon email to our partners at the Dallas Morning News. The baby, whose name is Rumi, underwent the procedure Monday morning and “is now recuperating under the loving care of his parents and his heroic team of doctors, nurses, and medical staff,” Budner wrote. Last week the surrogate mother, Mckenna West, asked a Dallas County court to order medical care for the baby she’s carrying.
