The incident happened around 7 p.m. Sunday in the Des Plaines River near Independence Grove in Libertyville. The Lake County Forest Preserve said the woman had entered the river to assist her son and, after helping him reach a family member, “she went underwater.” She was ultimately pulled from the water by a family member and others nearby as first responders were called to the scene. She was treated at the scene and taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, officials said. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death in the Des Plaines River near Libertyville on Sunday evening. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Ron Davis, Lake County Forest Preserves’ police chief, said in a statement.
