Jersey Shore police target crosswalk violations and enforce new e-bike rules

Police at the Jersey Shore are stepping up enforcement of street safety laws and new e-bike requirements as busy beach towns contend with cars, bikes and pedestrians during the summer season. In Harvey Cedars on Long Beach Island, police are using a seasonal officer as a decoy pedestrian to identify drivers who fail to stop for people in crosswalks. Officers then go after violators, issuing warnings or tickets. “We’ve been using the decoy all summer,” Sgt. Kevin Snow of the Harvey Cedars Police Department said. Seasonal Officer Greg Glassman watched as cars continued along busy Long Beach Boulevard while he tried to cross. “Every day it becomes a problem and a safety issue for everyone trying to go to the beach, trying to get home,” Glassman said. New Jersey law requires drivers to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks but police say getting drivers to comply remains a challenge. “They still don’t not get it.
