Test shows Richmond school is safe to reopen after discovery of toxic chemicals

After being closed due to the discovery of potentially toxic chemicals underneath the campus, new test results showed that Kennedy High is safe to reopen and will welcome students next week. The West Contra Costa Unified School District said they received preliminary test results showing varying levels of tetrachloroethylene underground below the Kennedy High School campus. The school was then shut down. During a town hall Thursday, the school district announced new indoor air testing shows the campus is safe to reopen, clearing the way for students to return on Tuesday, the first day of school. “We are really grateful to hear that they had no concerns that there would be any immediate or long term health risks for our students or staff so we are able to safely, in good confidence, bring our student back to Kennedy High building,” WCCUSD Spokesperson Liz Sanders said.
