‘I have a lot to live for': Greg Papa opens up about cancer fight, family and job

In his own words. Greg Papa sat down with NBC Bay Area for his first television interview since recent health complications from his cancer diagnosis. NBC Bay Area’s Raj Mathai met with the legendary broadcaster at his home in Marin County for a wide-ranging interview that focused on facing death, family, being laid off by KNBR and more. “I do not want to die,” Papa said. “I’m going to fight as hard as I can, fight to stay alive. I have a lot to live for.” For decades, Papa’s voice has brought to life some of the most colorful sports moments. He’s given the Bay Area memories that span generations from his time covering the A’s and Raiders to the Warriors, Giants and 49ers. These days, his voice is strong and still resonates, but the game has changed. Doctors diagnosed him with leukemia last summer. He got sick while vacationing in France. “There were many nights there that I felt, you know, I may die,” Papa said. “Cancer is unfair. Cancer is sudden. Cancer is cruel.” His lifeline turne
