Officials confirm 6th tornado tore through Chicago area during derecho

Officials with the National Weather Service have confirmed a tornado tore through Homewood and Lansing during Tuesday’s derecho. The tornado is the sixth confirmed by NWS officials stemming from Tuesday’s derecho, which tore across the Chicago area with wind speeds of nearly 100 miles per hour. According to the latest updates from the National Weather Service, a tornado touched down during Tuesday’s weather event just to the west of Halsted between 183rd and 187th streets. The tornado crossed Halsted and caused structural damage to a strip mall and multiple buildings in an apartment complex, then continued pushing through a neighborhood to the east, causing tree and roof damage to homes. It then tore across a cemetery near Glenwood Thornton Road before moving through the Thornton-Lansing Road Nature Preserve before lifting from the ground.
