1 dead after car drives off cliff in Santa Cruz, lands in ocean

One person died and another was injured after they drove off a cliff in Santa Cruz and landed in the ocean early Thursday morning, according to officials. The crash happened at about 12:50 a.m. off West Cliff Drive near the Steamer Lane surfing spot, officials said. One person was able to get out of the car on their own and reach safety, according to officials. They suffered minor injuries. Rescue swimmers jumped into the ocean and were able to pull a second person from the submerged car. Despite life-saving measures, that person later died at the hospital, officials said. Officials did not immediately say who was driving the car when the crash occurred. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
