Chicago-area schools hammered by severe weather, with some scrambling to open

Multiple school districts in northwest Indiana are being forced to cancel classes after a derecho hammered the region Tuesday, and Chicago-area schools are dealing with similar issues. Lake Central Corporation schools, which began instruction on Tuesday just in time for the powerful storm system to blast through the region, announced that it will continue canceling classes on Thursday and Friday after missing instruction on Wednesday. The powerful storms knocked out power to nearly all of Lake County, with wind speeds of 100 miles per hour reported during a derecho that swept through the Chicago area. Hobart, Indiana schools were also not in session Wednesday for their first scheduled day of classes, and they won’t have class on Thursday either.
