Delaware, NJ celebrate 75th anniversary of Delaware Memorial Bridge

Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) officials, alongside state officials from Delaware and New Jersey, celebrated major achievements of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The event, held in New Castle, Delaware, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, highlighted the 75th anniversary of the first span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and the completion of the $89 million Bridge Ship Collision Protection System (SCPS). The Ship Collision Protection System, which started construction nearly 10 years ago, consists of eight solid-fill “dolphin” cells – which are concrete, sand, and stone filled cylinders measuring 80 feet in diameter. The cells were installed to protect the bridge towers against potential boat-related collisions. “If a ship could go, should go astray, they will hit the cylinders and the cylinders sacrifice themselves. But then we don’t have a collision with the bridge,” DRBA Chief of Operations, Vince Meconi, said. Officials said $22.25 million of the project’s $89 million cost was provided
