Experts say the East Bay's Hayward Fault is ‘overdue' for a major earthquake

Thursday’s earthquake along the Hayward Fault served as a reminder of how “the big one” could impact populated spots in the East Bay. The Hayward Fault produced a 3.8 magnitude earthquake, but experts say it’s capable of producing a major one, too. “We do have historical records happening of earthquakes happening roughly every 150 years or so, and if you do the math, we are definitely a little bit overdue for an earthquake on the Hayward Fault based on those previous historical earthquakes,” Angie Lux with the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab said. The folks at the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab say the Hayward Fault is capable of producing a magnitude 6.0 or 7.0 quake. The Hayward Fault actually runs under the seismology lab as well as Cal Memorial Stadium and the Greek Theater. It also stretches through San Jose, Fremont, San Leandro, Hayward, Oakland, El Cerrito and Richmond. Alyssa Goard has the full report in the video above.
