Greenpeace activists painted the message “No Gas + Oil” in white paint on the tanker Kairos, which has been anchored in Burgas Bay for more than six months, as a sign of protest against dependence on oil and gas. The environmental organization’s icebreaker, the Arctic Sunrise, also participated in the operation, Greenpeace Bulgaria told BTA. Activists from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Spain, the United States, and the Philippines joined the protest. The organization added that the operation aims to draw attention to the risks to the Black Sea associated with the transport and use of fossil fuels. The operation took place three days after the Arctic Sunrise team documented a leak from the Kairos, Greenpeace added. The organization also cited its own satellite analysis from late July, which indicated that dozens of oil slicks were recorded near the tanker between late April and late July.
