Outbreak of Sheep and Goat Pox Confirmed in Village of Tyanevo

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) confirmed an initial outbreak of sheep and goat pox at a livestock facility in the village of Tyanevo, Southern Bulgaria, where 137 sheep are raised, the BFSA reported on Tuesday. The farmer notified the authorities after clinical signs of the disease appeared. A 5-kilometre protection zone has been established around the outbreak, encompassing the villages of Tyanevo, Dryanovo, and Ovcharovo. A 20-kilometre surveillance zone was established around the outbreak. Measures were taken to control and eradicate the disease in accordance with the provisions of European and national legislation. Livestock owners may be eligible for compensation under the Veterinary Practices Act. Restrictive measures are being implemented in the settlements within the protection and surveillance zones, including a ban on the movement of sheep and goats, with the exception of animals intended for immediate slaughter under certain conditions.
