Agriculture Minister Says Sunflower Imports from Ukraine Will Be Tested for Pesticides

Minister of Agriculture and Food Plamen Abrovski told reporters here on Saturday that all imports of sunflower seeds from Ukraine will be monitored and tested for pesticide residues, and Bulgaria has requested funds from the European Union’s crisis reserve to support farmers. "We have specific rules governing the import of sunflower seeds from Ukraine. Every single seed entering Bulgaria will be monitored and tested for pesticide residues," said the Minister. Commenting on expectations of a lower purchase price for wheat, Abrovski said he was not certain such a scenario would come to be. He noted that the military operations in Ukraine and the situation in the Black Sea region are hampering wheat exports from Ukraine and Russia, which would likely raise the price.
