Hot Springs, circa 1908: The Improved Order of Red Men operated the sanitarium at 637 Park Ave. The fraternal organization, founded in 1834, claimed to have directly descended from the colonial era Sons of Liberty. Membership was restricted only to white people until 1974. Memberships were once claimed to number a half million but is now down to about 15,000.
