San Francisco expands paid parental leave eligibility for workers

San Francisco is expanding paid parental leave benefits by making it easier for more workers to qualify. Mayor Daniel Lurie signed the ordinance Friday during a ceremony in North Beach after it was recently approved by the Board of Supervisors. The new law cuts in half the minimum amount of time employees must work for a company before becoming eligible for paid parental leave. Previously, workers had to be employed for 180 days. Under the new ordinance, eligibility begins after 90 days. City leaders said the change is intended to help more new and expecting parents qualify for benefits sooner without having to choose between their careers and their families.
