Morgan James Reimagines Classic Rock Through a Female Voice at Bansko Jazz Festival

Singer, songwriter and actress Morgan James brought her blend of soul and rock to the Bansko Jazz Festival on Monday evening, the organizers said. Speaking about her latest album, titled Soul Remains the Same - a collection of reimagined rock classics from the 1980s and 1990s, James said it gives a female perspective to songs she described as traditionally "male songs", as she summed up its sound as "Aretha Franklin walking into the studio with AC/DC." Having grown up with that music, she emphasized she wanted to reinterpret it through a woman's voice because there were so few female artists in the genre. Raised in an artistic family, James credits her parents with introducing her to artists ranging from The Beatles and Joni Mitchell to Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin, alongside opera and musical theatre.
