Romania Uses Controlled Explosion to Diverts Danube Water to Cernavoda N-Plant

Romania's military has resumed an operation to carry out a controlled demolition of the Prajoaia rock formation in order to divert more water from the Danube to the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), local news media reported. After an initial attempt to completely destroy the rock formation on Sunday proved unsuccessful, teams from the Ministry of National Defence used a double explosive charge of 100 kilograms and succeeded in demolishing the rock located near the Bala branch of the Danube. The objective is to create a barrier in the Bala branch, forcing a greater volume of water to flow through the Old Danube channel. Two barges and a heavy-duty crane have been deployed to remove the rock debris. The operation comes as the Danube's flow rate at Romania's entry point could fall to 1,400 cubic metres per second, a level close to a historic low of 1985.
