Clarinettist Marinov Charts Eastern Quartet’s Journey from Pandemic to Festival Stage

The Eastern Quartet formed by chance during the COVID-19 pandemic, clarinettist Atanas Marinov said Saturday before its performance at the Dr Emil Iliev International Jazz Festival in Borovets. Marinov and violinist Sorin Spasinovich founded the Swiss quartet. “We started playing well-known classical pieces for fun,” Marinov said. They later decided to pursue the project seriously and recruited accordionist Seraphim von Werra to perform classical and jazz music. Another pianist joined briefly before pianist Dominik Blum took over and became a permanent member. A long-time piano teacher, Blum is von Werra’s father. The musicians said their concept was to perform works in their original form before offering their own interpretations. Their constant improvisation led them to include two chordal instruments, piano and accordion, in the ensemble. The musicians said every member contributed to the performances.
