The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade (DOH-Miami-Dade) issued a mosquito-borne illness alert on Monday. This alert comes after one confirmed case of dengue fever in the local area, according to the DOH-Miami-Dade. DOH-Miami-Dade said dengue presents itself with flu-like symptoms like fevers, joint and muscle pain, and sometimes a rash. They also mentioned that there usually aren’t respiratory symptoms. Dengue symptoms, the DOH-Miami-Dade said, appear within 14 days of being bitten by an Aedes aegypti mosquito. They also said dengue fever is not contagious. The DOH-Miami-Dade recommends people to: Apply bug repellent Treat your clothing and gear with products that have .5% permethrin Empty standing water at least once a week, which includes things like coolers and buckets, as mosquitoes breed in standing water Use an air-conditioner and keep screens on all windows to keep the mosquitoes outside
