The twisted vile of Trump’s America exposed in Apple’s new 'Cape Fear'

It seems that every three decades, Americans are treated to another iteration of "Cape Fear." A classic thriller story about a deranged stalker based on the 1957 John D. MacDonald novel "The Executioners," each version tells the tale of a devious ex-con named Max Cady who obsessively terrorizes a lawyer's family. While on the surface it's a standard psychological crime story, all three variants are masterpieces for a reason one does not often see in this genre — because they speak to deeper issues in the American zeitgeist at their time of release. For that reason, before I review the 2026 miniseries, I must review the two alternatives that have been likewise captured on camera.
