The Difference Between Being Lonely and Being Lonesome

Like Gustave Flaubert, I believe there are no true synonyms. Every word occupies its own territory of meaning. Lonesome and lonely are not interchangeable; the distinction matters because lonesome is almost archaic. We seldom use it.
